OUR SOLDIER’S CHRISTMAS CANDLE
by Mariane Holbrook
We stared at the letter and said not a word;
The typewritten pages seemed suddenly blurred.
“Dear Soldier,” it stated, “Our country’s at war;
We need you to serve like you did once before.”
We knelt by our bed and you started to pray,
“Protect my dear family while I am away.
Surround them with angels and give me Your grace
To go into battle; who knows what I’ll face?”
The children and I waved goodbye as you left.
I held them all close for each one was bereft.
We’ve kept a lit candle since you went away
And each time we pass it, we take time to pray.
I’ve read all your letters again and again;
Praise God for the witness you are to your men.
I pray for the families of those who have died.
These boys were your friends and you broke down and cried.
Our country’s indebted to all servicemen
And millions say “thank you” again and again.
If not for our troops, then we would not be free
And life would be worthless for you and for me.
One day very soon you’ll rush in through our door
And we’ll be together, dear, just as before.
Tonight’s Christmas candle still shines in full view
Until you come home, it will still burn for you.
