THE CALM AFTER THE STORM
The one season of the year, that is hard to bear,
All the heat and humidity, just hang in the air.
The flowers from spring are beaten and gone,
The evenings are filled with storms going on.

An electric show almost every night
As for me and summer, it's the highlight.
The rolling, rumbling echoes, all around
Then the fireworks begin, just after the sounds.

In August begins our threat of hurricanes,
Some islanders move out, but some remain.
They batten down the hatches and settle in,
Until the storm comes and is gone again.

I remember one year in particular,
The height of hurricanes was spectacular.
We had three that season, for some reason,
One named Dennis, was a real menace.

He came on shore and spent some time,
Then spiraled back out to sea on the climb,
In and out it spun dumping lots of rain,
Then one day shortly after Floyd joined the game.

Floyd pushed Dennis back out to sea,
As if to say "Make room for me."
He came inland and stayed for awhile,
His winds and rain, just added to Dennis' pile.

He traveled across North Carolina heading north,
More fearless and relentless than the one before
Dumping rain until the dam couldn't hold,
From east to west, north to south, water
was rushing bold.

Landmarks that we all held dear, were washed away,
Floating with rushing waters, day by day.
Flood levels became breached, flooding was prevelant.
Thank God for those who helped with their
benevolence.

Homes were lost, personal possessions too,
Families devestated by death were more than a few.
The "Flood of the Century" it was declared,
The Red Cross, Military, were all called out, especially the welfare.

All were called out to aid the despaired,
Schools were temporary homes, while housing was prepared.
Families of as many as six lived in small trailers,
And lived with the aid of the government
until jobs and homes were available.

Farmers lost all their crops and live stock too,
It felt like the world was ending right in
plain view.
But God is Good, even though it seemed like ages,
He was there with His children, and helped
us along in stages.

For us who live here and experienced it first hand,
It seemed like a nightmare,  had hit our land.
But now the storm of the century is history,
Although, it still lives on in our memories.

Much was lost, but even more was gained,
We learned to reach out for our neighbors hand.
Extend help to those who needed it more,
And give of ourselves, because we knew
God would restore.

Finally, there was the calm after the storm,
And those who survived, were left forlorn,
But time is a great healer, and faith in our
fellowman,
Has brought us through the worse tragedy
in our homeland.

After the great flood of the Century here in my home state, the "LIGHT" from above
shown down through the trees, and a prism of colors was so beautiful to see!  We thank God for safety and restoration in our great
time of need ! ! ! !

Psalms 24: 1-2~ The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
For He hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
