PENNY WAITS
A long time ago in horse and carriage days,
There stood a big beautiful home on display.
The envy and pride of this neighborhood,
Ten Twenty Maple was where it stood.

It's rambling exterior was Victorian in style,
And folk would come to see it from many miles.
Of course they would love a glimpse inside,
But 'twas forbidden by its owner, Mr. Clyde.

Mrs. Clyde was gone you see, she died in
giving birth.
To a beautiful little baby girl, the most
precious on earth.
This little babe was so loved by her Dad,
But mostly when he looked at her, it made
him sad.

He was very wealthy and importing was his trade
He dealt in antiquities of value and vintage age.
So what to do with little babe, who he
named Penny
He decided to hire a governess and was
willing to pay plenty

Finally he made his decision and hired the best
After talking with many, she ranked above
the rest.
The only thing that gave him bother, was
her name,
Because his beautiful wife, Mary, was named
the same.

So he decided that Penny would call her mother
The resemblance was remarkable, be it
known to others.
He would be away often, and in her care
Penny would stay.
So he thought if she had a mother there, she
would be happy when he was away.

Well, the years started to pass, Penny was
a pretty young lass,
With big brown eyes, olive skin and reddish
brown hair.
That Mother (as Mary was called) would
pull up in a bow
to cascade over her shoulders in ringlets
of curls to show.

For sometime now her Father was gone,
more and more,
And many days, Penny would wait by
the door.
"When's Father coming home Mother,"
she would say
And Mary would console her by saying, "I'm
sure any day."

On occasions Mr. Clyde would appear at last,
And he would spend every minute with
his lass.
Penny loved all the attention and love
he would show,
And off again before too long, he'd board
a ship and go.

Away across the Atlantic to London Town to shop
He would go on many trips to choose his
wares to swap.
Always sending Penny a gift each and
every time,
She waited anxiously for each package
so sublime.

This time He was gone for an extra long stretch
and Mary started to worry, so the police
she fetched.
Told them her query and why she was worried,
See if you can locate him, and for Penny,
please hurry.

Penny stayed up in her room and stared out
at the street below,
Watching for any sign of her handsome
Father to show.
She became so sad, and for food she
relented,
Still watching from the window trying hard
not to resent.

Not knowing if it was that he had stopped
loving her so
The gifts no longer came, she wondered,
could it be, though.
He wouldn't forget his only little girl,
and what of Mary
I think he still loves her, even though
sometimes he's contrary.

At last one day the knocking was heard at
the door,
We're sorry Mrs. Clyde, your husband was
found on shore.
The ship had dashed upon some rocks and
was lost,
His body was found a few miles away in
a wash.

She thanked them politely restraining her tears
How can I tell Penny, the poor little dear.
She loves her Father so, even though he
was often gone,
How can I tell her, he's not coming home.

Just then Penny appeared at the base of the
stairs,
And said, Mother, He's not coming, I am aware,
Mary in surprise said "Penny, what do you
mean."
She replied, " I talked to Father last night
in a dream."

He told me all about my real Mother, and how
she passed away,
And that he especially picked you, to take care
of me each day.
About how much he loves me, and wouldn't
take the time,
To be here with me more and how he felt it
was a crime.

But I reasurred him and told him I knew, love
is not always what you do
It's that special bond that blends our souls
together true.
And the way you say my name, like it comes
from deep within,
I knew that you were my Father and will be
until the end.

I love you Father, and I love you Penny dear !
